The intern will assist the Consumer Protection Division in conducting research on consumer protection issues faced by consumers in Singapore, for example, issues arising from the making of green claims by suppliers, the use of dark patterns by e-commerce suppliers, and how to better identify and protect vulnerable consumers against unfair practices by suppliers. The intern will also have the opportunity to be involved in the handling of consumer complaints and attend meetings with relevant stakeholders to appreciate how CCCS works with various stakeholders to protect consumers against unfair practices.

What the role is
What you will be working on
• Understand the consumer protection framework in Singapore and the role that CCCS plays in administering and enforcing the Consumer Protection (Fair Trading) Act 2003.
• Assist in managing internal consumer protection information databases and analysing databases for trends.
• Assist in gathering and analysing information from public websites using manual and automated means.
• Assist in the conduct of market studies and research projects on consumer protection issues and concerns.
• Research on consumer protection enforcement action and regulatory responses of consumer protection regulatory authorities in other jurisdictions.
• Assist in formulating and drafting recommendations on regulatory responses to identified consumer protection concerns.
• Assist in outreach efforts to the industry and engagements on international platforms on fair trading.

About Competition and Consumer Commission of Singapore
The Competition and Consumer Commission of Singapore (“CCCS”) administers and enforces the Competition Act (Cap. 50B) which empowers CCCS to investigate and adjudicate anti-competitive activities, issue directions to stop and/or prevent anti-competitive activities and impose financial penalties. CCCS is also the administering agency of the Consumer Protection (Fair Trading) Act (Cap. 52A) or CPFTA which protects consumers against unfair trade practices in Singapore.
