What the role is

Reporting to the Shipping Division (Maritime Investigation Department), you will be part of a team of marine professionals whose key purpose is to conduct inquiries on marine casualties and incidents under the Merchant Shipping Act 1995. The inquiries seek to determine the cause of the casualty, including any infringements of the provisions under the Merchant Shipping Act 1995.

What you will be working on

The key responsibilities for this role include:

• Carry out inquiries and investigations on-site, as directed by the Director of Marine, on casualty or incident that occurred in Singapore waters, in accordance with the provisions under the Merchant Shipping Act
1995 and the IMO’s Casualty Investigation Code, as applicable.


• Carry out inquiries and investigations, on casualty or incident that occurred on board Singapore-registered ships wherever they may be, in accordance with the provisions under the Merchant Shipping Act 1995 and the IMO’s Casualty Investigation Code, as applicable.


• As part of the inquiry and investigation, the officer will gather information through speaking to the crew and/or shipping company, collect evidence through boarding the vessel to conduct checks; and analyse the evidences for determining apparent cause and culpability.


• The Maritime Investigation Department shall identify the root causes, and provide to the Director of Marine, his recommendations, or deterrent measures. 

What we are looking for

You should possess a Certificate of Competency (Deck) Class 1 or COC 1 (Motorship) and working experience onboard ocean-going vessels either in the deck or engine department for at least 3 years. You should be familiar with various code and legislation, both at the national and international levels. Candidates with prior working experience as Master/Chief Engineer, Marine Pilot / Marine Warranty Surveyor / Class, Flag or Port State Control Surveyor / or PCG, MOM, SCDF investigator, would have an added advantage.
