What the role is

The role is for an Assistant Director / Senior Assistant Director in the Behavioural Insights Team of the Environmental Behavioural Sciences & Economics Research Unit (EBERU) under the Research, Futures & Planning Division (RFPD). You will be working on projects that use behavioural sciences to inform policy formulation and improve operations within the ministry family. These projects address MSE’s strategic priorities, namely Sustainability and Resource Efficiency, Food Safety and Security, and Improving Liveability. EBERU conducts empirical research to support the development, implementation and evaluation of policies related to sustainability and the environment. We use both quantitative and qualitative research methods to provide holistic advice to our stakeholders on ways to improve operational efficiency or to inform policy discourse. This could range from designing nudges to promote environmentally sustainable behaviours to conducting non-market evaluation of environmental goods and services.

What you will be working on

As a member of the Behavioural Insights Team, your job scope includes: • Engaging policy and operational stakeholders to understand their objectives, and scoping research plans to deliver insights in achieving those objectives. • Conducting ethnographic fieldwork, such as observations and interviews, to better understand behavioural barriers and drivers. • Designing and evaluating behavioural interventions to overcome behavioural barriers in order to achieve desired outcomes. • Designing and conducting surveys that seek to understand public sentiments on issues in environment and sustainability.

What we are looking for

• A degree in social sciences such as behavioural economics, psychology, sociology, anthropology and human geography, or a design-related background such as design thinking, communication design, user experience and human factors engineering. • Preferably at least 2 years of experience in social and behavioural research. • Understands quantitative research methods such as designing and conducting surveys and randomised controlled trials. • Understands qualitative research methods such as conducting observations, interviews and focus group discussions. • Has some experience in running statistical tests such as ANOVAs, regressions and difference-in-difference analyses, using tools such as Excel, SPSS, Stata, R or Python. • Proactive and independent, but also enjoys collaborating within a team. • Curious to learn from others, and also enthusiastic in sharing new knowledge. • Good interpersonal skills to engage various stakeholders, and good listening skills to understand the needs of the stakeholders. • Good communication skills to simplify behavioural science concepts and present research findings to policymakers and laypersons.
