Data Engineer Intern (GIS)

Urban Redevelopment Authority

Internship

Closing on 31 Jan 2025

What the role is

Be part of URA’s Design and Planning Lab (DPL), which spearheads URBEX efforts in the experimentation and development of smart planning technologies through Policy-Ops-Tech collaborations. Our teams leverage on their capabilities in data policy, governance, strategy, and engineering, product strategy, business analysis, software engineering, cloud engineering, urban design technologies, data science, AI/ML, and modelling and simulation to collaborate with planners, architects, and policymakers to create insights and digital solutions for Singapore’s urban planning challenges.

What you will be working on

he next-gen Common Land Inventory project aims to automate and streamline data collection processes of land use inventories across multiple sources to form an accurate database of Singapore's land uses to inform current and future planning needs. As an intern with DPL, you will be tasked to: - Assist in holistically designing logics and rules for execution of GIS scripts and tools, including sensible thresholds and tolerances to execute. - Develop geospatial tools and scripts to automate land inventory tracking and data collection processes, - Engage user groups to understand permutations in processes, test viability of rules and logic and if it meets their current processes and needs. - Build data pipeline to fuse land inventory data from different sources into a single land inventory layer. - Simulate parcel options to meet planning parameters for redevelopment modelling & simulation. Learning Outcomes: - Gain a deep understanding of how planner work with land inventory data to plan for current and future land use needs. - Gain insights on future capabilities that DPL is developing in enhancing land and space inventory datasets to support planning processes across whole of government. - Deepen geospatial information system (GIS) capabilities with real world practical use cases and examples, with real impact on planners' work and data processes. - Gain intergroup work collaboration to conduct service journey mapping and understand planners' needs in designing solutions.

What we are looking for

- Undergraduates pursuing Computer Science, Geography (with GIS specialisation), Urban Planning, Architecture, or any urban planning related fields. - Familiarity with data engineering, especially with GIS datasets. - Familiarity with GIS systems and tools (e.g. ArcGIS Pro) - Experience with data visualisation tools such as Tableau or Power BI. - Experience with data management tools and coding languages such as SQL, Python, or R. - Knowledge in Service Journey and Design Thinking.

About Urban Redevelopment Authority

The Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) is Singapore's national land use planning authority. URA prepares long term strategic plans, as well as detailed local area plans, for physical development, and then co-ordinates and guides efforts to bring these plans to reality. Prudent land use planning has enabled Singapore to enjoy strong economic growth and social cohesion, and ensures that sufficient land is safeguarded to support continued economic progress and future development.
