Environmental Modelling Intern

Urban Redevelopment Authority

Internship

Closing on 31 Jan 2025

What the role is

Design & Planning Lab (DPLab) is a group within URA driving URA's Urban Planning & Design Technology Centre of Excellence (URBEX) efforts. Our teams with capabilities in software development, geospatial analytics, urban design modelling & simulation, data science, AI / ML, data engineering, data governance and management, work closely with planners, architects, policy makers across various agencies, as well as external partners, to generate insights and develop tools and solutions to tackle Singapore's urban planning challenges. Within DPLab, the Environmental Modelling team works to incorporate various modelling tools and climate/weather datasets to better help inform the urban planning and design processes for better outdoor thermal comfort and mitigate urban heat island effects. Additionally, the Environmental Modelling team is expanding its focus to include carbon modelling at the district level. This initiative aims to assess and optimise the carbon footprint of urban plans and developments, supporting Singapore's sustainability goals and informing climate-responsive urban planning strategies.

What you will be working on

Internship Job Scope: • Conduct environmental modelling such as outdoor thermal comfort modelling and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) wind flow modelling, etc. • Help on the documentation and development of a playbook for environmental modelling workflow. • Develop/refine scripts (e.g. Python, Grasshopper on Rhino) to automate data processing/ preparation for further analysis. • Perform data analytics and develop visualisation features of environmental sensor data collected on existing web GIS application. Learning Outcomes: • Learn how environmental modelling is being integrated with upstream urban planning and design process to mitigate urban challenges such as urban heat island effect and climate change. • Gain working experience in performing environmental modelling studies (e.g. wind flow, solar irradiance, shadow analysis) of actual urban planning projects. • Develop skillsets in data analytics, web applications and visualisation from sensor data collected.

What we are looking for

• Undergraduates currently pursuing Engineering / Architecture or related fields. • Strong interest in the use of computational modelling and methods to support sustainable urban development. • Basic knowledge and experience in CAD software (Rhino), GIS, web application development will be an added advantage. • Note that only shortlisted candidates will be notified.

About Urban Redevelopment Authority

The Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) is Singapore's national land use planning authority. URA prepares long term strategic plans, as well as detailed local area plans, for physical development, and then co-ordinates and guides efforts to bring these plans to reality. Prudent land use planning has enabled Singapore to enjoy strong economic growth and social cohesion, and ensures that sufficient land is safeguarded to support continued economic progress and future development.
