What the role is
What you will be working on
As Singapore prepares to host APEC in 2030, there is a need to develop a suite of potential deliverables for APEC 2030.
Contributing to MTI’s preparations to host APEC 2030, you will: (i) conduct research on APEC (and relevant international organisations such as G20)’s themes and deliverables from 2009 to 2025; (ii) identify trends across those themes; and (iii) suggest potential themes and ideas for APEC 2030. You will also support the APEC team in their APEC work as well as preparation for APEC 2030 where needed.
Problem Statement(s)
1. What would be an appropriate level of ambition for APEC 2030 and how can we align these with Singapore’s interests and long-term objectives?
2. What has APEC done and where is it heading?
3. How can Singapore's APEC 2030 agenda build upon past APEC themes?
Technical and Desk Work
1. Comprehensive review and understanding of past APEC chairmanships’ themes, priorities, and deliverables.
2. Research on emerging economic issues in the Asia-Pacific region that APEC as a platform should address.
3. How Singapore’s economic interests may be refitted into an APEC 2030 theme and priority.
Exposure and Platforms
1. [When available/appropriate] Attend relevant APEC meetings
2. Support the implementation of Singapore’s two APEC projects in 2025
3. Contribute to the broader planning for Singapore’s hosting of APEC 2030
What we are looking for
- Research and creativity skills with the ability to synthesise information from various sources, and an interest in international economic cooperation. You should have a broad understanding of Singapore’s economic interests and policies.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal are required. Suitable for a graduate student or advanced undergraduate in economics, international relations, public policy, or a related field. Familiarity with APEC is a plus, but not required.
