What the role is

The ISEAS - Yusof Ishak Institute is a leading research centre dedicated to the study of socio-political, security and economic trends and developments in Southeast Asia and its wider geostrategic and economic development. Applications are invited for:

Research Officer, Media, Technology and Society Programme (MTS)

The research officer assists in research projects and computational analysis on a range of social media issues. Typically these projects examine the different ways social media and digital technologies are shaping diverse forms of political participation, collective actions and behaviours, and their impact on political systems and socio-economic life.

What you will be working on

Responsibilities:

  • Monitor social media communications and activities for further analysis and review

  • Assist researchers with quantitative analysis, programming, and statistical support

  • Perform data acquisition, data cleansing, and other general research support activities

  • Prepare visualizations such as table and graph outputs

  • Assist in the editing of reports and publications by MTS researchers

  • Contribute to the Institute’s collective research and public outreach efforts

What we are looking for

Requirements:

  • University degree in computer science, humanities, or social sciences (especially media studies and digital humanities) with knowledge in quantitative or computational analysis; an advanced degree would be an advantage;

  • Ability to translate humanities and social science theories and concepts to data science applications;

  • Familiar with social media platforms and analytics;

  • Knowledge of programming languages (e.g. Python, JavaScript and SQL) and visualisation tools will be an advantage;

  • Good communication and writing skills in English;

  • Analytical and problem-solving skills, positive work attitude, a high sense of professionalism, and ability to work under demanding circumstances.
