What the role is

Reporting to MPA's Hydrographic Division, candidate will be part of our team of maritime professionals whose responsibilities are to ensure safe navigation in Singapore waters by providing hydrographic, cartographic and aids to navigation products and services.

What you will be working on

Officer is required to perform duties at the five lighthouses operated by MPA. The lighthouses are located on offshore islands (including Pedra Branca) and on mainland Singapore. The manned lighthouses are scheduled daily for routine checks to ensure they are functional to ensure navigational safety in the Straits of Malacca and Singapore while the unmanned lighthouses are scheduled for monthly cleaning and maintenance.

During the rostered 10-day shift at the offshore lighthouses, with the more senior lightkeeper to be in charge, he/she is responsible for ensuring that the light equipment is in working condition and he is required to perform basic maintenance task and perform operator level electrical checks for the power system of the marine AtoN lantern and also, the domestic power system at Pulau Pisang. He/She is also required to carry out housekeeping and cleaning works at all the manned/unmanned lighthouses.  He/She will be required to take care of the surroundings on the manned lighthouses, and this could include trimming of trees and clearing of pathways.

The Lightkeeper is responsible to draft all lighthouse reports and plan the work routine for the team, ensuring that all tasks are completed within the 10 days roster. He/She is also responsible to check on the identity of any visitors, provide escort during the visit and report to office for such visits by visitors.

What we are looking for

The work entails embarking and disembarking with equipment from small vessels to jetties via ladders/ landing steps and long duration on board vessel. The officer will be required to transfer stores between the vessel and jetties during the transfer. Additionally, accessing Pulau Pisang Lighthouse requires walking up and down a 100 metres hill with elevation.The boat ride to Pulau Pisang takes approximately 4 hours.

Officer is required to be physically fit in order to perform these activities and be able to attend and pass training courses such as first aid, AED/CPR, safe transfer at sea courses.
