The Data Strategist will play a pivotal role in elevating the planning and engagement on data matters within the organisation. This position will be under the governance arm of the Data and Analytics Governance Branch (DAGB) and will focus on integrating data strategies with data policies to enhance overall data management and utilisation. The Data Strategist will work collaboratively with stakeholders to develop and execute data policies, build data capabilities, and foster a culture of data-driven decision-making across the organisation.

What you will be working on
Strategic Planning & Implementation
• Review, enhance and execute the strategies outlined in the Data Masterplan, ensuring the sustainability of data expertise and aligning long-term plans with organisational objectives.
• Plan and develop resource request applications with comprehensive justifications to support organisation’s needs and monitor outcome and return from resource utilisation and forecast future requirements.
• Plan and drive the evaluation and adoption of new data technologies with stakeholders including business users, data owner and data analysts through proofs of concept and proof of value.
• Develop and manage comprehensive data workplans while identifying and mitigating data-related risks in a systematic manner.
• Assist in the planning, consultation, and execution of data policies to ensure compliance and effectiveness.
• Contribute to the overall data transformation initiatives within Customs by drawing connections between data strategies and the operations of corporate and business divisions.
Data Capability and Culture Development
• Review, plan and implement data training roadmaps and programs to enhance data competency and expertise within the organisation while partnering data analysts and stakeholders to develop the curriculum and scope.
• Promote a data-driven culture through initiatives including fostering data collaboration and growing and harnessing a data community of practice. This may involve facilitating the sharing of success stories and organising brownbags including sessions with external industry and data experts.
What we are looking for
• Educational Background: A degree in Data Science, Information Management, Public Administration, or a related field. Advanced degrees or certifications in data management and data governance are a plus.
• Experience: Proven experience in stakeholder management, policy development and implementation, organisational change management and driving cultural transformation or related roles.
• Skills: Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex information and convey findings and recommendations to diverse audiences. Excellent communication, collaboration, and stakeholder engagement skills. Strong PowerPoint skills is a plus.
• Knowledge: Familiarity with data strategy, governance and management principles, data privacy regulations, and risk management frameworks. Understanding of data-driven decision-making processes.
• Attributes: A proactive and innovative thinker with a passion for data and its potential to drive organisational success. Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
