The Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) is a statutory board under the Ministry of National Development (MND). As the custodian of Singapore’s built heritage, URA is responsible for recommending buildings for conservation, regulating restoration projects, and the planning and management of heritage districts. We also promote awareness of our built heritage and best practices in restoration and management of the buildings. Through our built heritage, we aim to connect the past, present and future generations of Singaporeans.

As an intern with the Conservation Department, you will be part of the team supporting heritage, archival and research studies for Singapore’s conservation areas and buildings. You will work closely to support our professional team. Your responsibilities will include: [Heritage and Archival Studies, 2 vacancies] 1. Through online and on-site research, to assist planners and architects in the study of areas with heritage significance. 2. Search, retrieve, extract, digitise and/or data entry of archival records from across different agencies. [Data Collection and Condition Survey of Past AHA Winners, 1 vacancy] 1. Conduct desktop research on past Architectural Heritage Award-winning buildings, reviewing records on Additions & Alterations (A&A) or redevelopment since the time of Award. 2. Assess current condition of these subject buildings by a) Desktop research b) On-site visits and visual documentation where necessary. 3. Prepare a report detailing findings on post-Award developments (e.g comparing condition at point of award and current, patterns or recurring issues across subject buildings etc) to contribute to the development of outreach materials and understanding of challenges behind long-term maintenance. As the work involves close collaboration with the planners and architects of the Conservation Department, interns who have successfully completed their internship will gain knowledge and understanding of the following: • URA’s role as the Conservation Authority and the “3R” principles (Maximum Retention, Sensitive Restoration and Careful Repair) in guiding the work of conservation in Singapore. • Understand that historic buildings and districts give us a visual and physical link to Singapore’s past in our changing urban landscape, and conservation is more than just preserving a facade or the external shell of a building. • The importance of retaining the inherent spirit and original ambience of historic buildings as far as possible. Which requires an appreciation and understanding of the architectural structure of the buildings, good management, and practice in conserving buildings. • Considerations and criteria in protection of our built heritage and exposure to various ways to safeguard, celebrate and recall heritage and identity.

• Students who are currently pursuing Architecture, Urban Planning, Architectural Conservation, Civil Engineering, Real Estate, Facilities Management, History, Geography or related fields. • Good mastery of Microsoft Office applications. • Familiarity with GIS and/or CAD software will be a plus.
