What the role is

The Coastal and Marine (C&M) branch of the National Biodiversity Centre, National Parks Board (NParks), aims to provide Singapore with a strong basis to adopt a proactive, balanced and forward-planning approach to Coastal and Marine related policy, management, and research-direction issues, consistent with its long-term economic and sustainable development goals. This is part of NParks commitment to an inter-agency initiative to strengthen Singapore’s capacity in areas related to the coastal and marine environment and to the conservation of Singapore's marine biodiversity.

Our interdisciplinary team undertakes a broad range of technical and operational projects, including ecology and the environment, coastal dynamics, legislation and regulations, Marine Park operations, management and programming, and other technical areas of coastal and marine environment concern. An external committee of domain experts provides advice on these projects. Publication of results and policy recommendations for the management of the coastal and marine environment are key deliverables of the team. Team members are expected to work collaboratively with each other, and with counterparts working in related areas within NParks and other agencies.

What you will be working on

We are looking for a passionate and self-motivated individual who will be part of the team to support the following tasks at the Coastal & Marine Branch:

- Manage projects, prepare reports and publications that are aligned with the strategic areas of the branch, particularly relating to NParks’ coral restoration programme and biodiversity surveys

- Collaborate with research and tertiary institutions on research projects that contribute to marine conservation.

- Initiate and implement conservation, research, outreach and volunteer projects and programmes to raise awareness and action for marine conservation in Singapore.

- Conduct field surveys which assess biodiversity and monitor the coastal and marine environment.

- Manage volunteers and public feedback.

- Engage, interact, and work with different stakeholders including government agencies, academics, researchers, interest groups and volunteers.

- Organise technical meetings, training workshops, events, talks and conferences

What we are looking for

- Areas of study in Life Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Marine Biology, Environmental Management, or related discipline is preferred

- PADI SCUBA diving advanced certification (or equivalent) and research diving experience in Singapore would be advantageous

- Good knowledge of the coastal & marine environment and possess marine-related fieldwork experience, including intertidal and/or subtidal surveys

- Strong communication, project management, coordination, and stakeholder engagement skills

- Knowledge of statistical analysis, Image, geographic information system (GIS) and scientific writing would be an advantage

- Familiarity with the marine stakeholder community and events in Singapore would be an advantage

- Willing to work on weekends and after office hours

Only shortlisted candidates will be notified. Successful candidate will be offered a 11-month employment contract.
