What the role is
We are seeking a dedicated Lab Technical Officer to support our dynamic and engaging teaching environment. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operation of laboratories, storage, and preparation rooms.
What you will be working on
Essential Job Functions
As a Lab Technical Officer, Education Programmes, you will be responsible for setting up and maintaining laboratory equipment and materials, ensuring proper housekeeping, and supporting educators in delivering impactful Science and STEM lessons. Your work will directly contribute to inspiring young minds and cultivating curiosity through hands-on learning experiences.
1. Technological and Resource Management
You will prepare and provide the necessary apparatus, equipment, tools, and teaching materials before each lesson. After lessons, you’ll be responsible for clearing, cleaning, and properly storing all used materials and equipment.
Inventory management is a key part of the role. You’ll monitor stock levels, track breakage and usage, and ensure timely replenishment of consumables and tools. This includes supporting annual stock checks and maintaining accurate records of all laboratory assets.
You’ll also handle the procurement process—sourcing equipment and materials from trusted vendors while following procurement procedures. Upon receiving goods, you will verify their condition and follow up on any quality issues with suppliers.
Maintaining a clean, safe, and well-organised work and storage environment is essential. You’ll clean all lab equipment with care, ensure fragile apparatus is handled correctly, and recommend replacements or new purchases when needed.
2. Safety Compliance and Risk Assessments
Ensuring lab safety is a top priority. You’ll manage Safety Data Sheets for chemicals, maintain accurate hazard labelling, and ensure all equipment and materials have up-to-date Risk Assessments and Safe Work Procedures.
You’ll participate in lab safety audits and inspections and ensure compliance with Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) regulations from relevant authorities and internal policies. As the designated First Aider for the lab, you’ll receive training to respond appropriately in emergencies.
3. Professional Responsibilities
You’ll work closely with Science and STEM educators to support research projects, contribute ideas for lab improvements, and help deliver engaging educational experiences. Your role may also involve supporting lab-related events and programmes.
To keep your skills relevant and current, you’ll participate in technical or soft skills training and other professional development opportunities. You may also take on additional lab-related duties as required to support departmental and organisational goals.
