SYSTEMS ADMINISTRATOR - DIGITAL SERVICES & TECHNOLOGY OFFICE
What the role is
What you will be working on
We are looking for a proactive and detail-oriented Systems Administrator with a strong background in Microsoft SQL Server and cloud technologies. This pivotal role involves ensuring the performance, security, and reliability of our database and infrastructure systems. Moreover, there is a need for daily monitoring, backup and recovery operations, and ensuring data security and availability. Strong problem-solving, troubleshooting skills and a proactive approach to systems management are essential. The role also requires the close collaboration with cross-functional teams, support business-critical applications, and have hands-on exposure to both on-premises and cloud environments, including Microsoft Azure.
SQL Server Administration
Install, configure, and upgrade Microsoft SQL Server environments.
Monitor SQL Server Agent jobs and troubleshoot job failures.
Manage disk space and monitor transaction log usage to ensure system health.
Ensure timely and successful completion of all database backup and recovery operations.
Execute maintenance plans (e.g., index rebuilds, statistics updates).
Respond to and manage IT security access requests in compliance with protocols.
Operational Support & Troubleshooting
Troubleshoot incidents, identify root causes, fix, and document problems, and implement preventive measures.
Provide daily support for database-related incidents via the ticketing system.
Collaborate with the Development team to execute data scripts and troubleshoot issues.
Perform regular database refreshes across environments.
Monitoring, Reporting & Documentation
Monitor database growth, system performance, and availability using proactive tools.
Maintain accurate and updated documentation of configurations, procedures, and changes.
Utilize Veritas NetBackup and generate IT analytics reports.
Support monthly OS and database patching efforts.
Additional Responsibilities
Serve as the administrator for Syllabus Plus (academic timetabling tool).
Act as an Azure Cloud Administrator, supporting hybrid cloud initiatives.
Working in tandem with cross-functional teams such as security, governance, business stakeholders to manage and implement systems, to identify gaps, meet compliance and adapt to business changes.
Orchestrate and automate cloud-based platforms with relevant Artificial Intelligence knowledge which will be an added advantage.
What we are looking for
At least 5+ years of hands-on experience in Microsoft SQL Database administration.
Resilient, resourceful with good problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, and thrive in a fast-paced, results-oriented work environment.
Proven expertise in Microsoft SQL clustering for high availability solutions.
Knowledge/Experience in Azure Cloud administration.
Strong skills in:
Installing, configuring, and maintaining SQL Server instances.
Performing database backups and restorations to ensure data availability.
Monitoring database performance issues, resource utilization, optimizing SQL queries, and health systems.
Experience implementing security protocols to safeguard data integrity and confidentiality.
Proficient in applying SQL patches and updates, including Security vulnerability remediation, Bug fixes implementation.
Performance optimization for Azure SQL databases.
Troubleshoot and resolve any issues related to the Microsoft SQL setup which include networks, software, hardware, and operating systems.
Experience in Database restore and refresh.
Experience in the following will be an added advantage:
Developing coding/scripting to build required automation and tools using Azure CLI, PowerShell, SQL, etc.
Automating IT and business processes, managing enterprise IT infrastructure (servers, databases, and/or network) will be an added advantage.
Experience in using AI tools to enhance productivity and automate tasks will be an added advantage.
Experience in Veritas NetBackup (backup/restore, policies) will be an added advantage.
