What the role is

Disruptive Technologies Office explores and conducts research and development in emerging scientific fields to uncover potential threats and discover transformative solutions for the Home Team. We are looking for an individual who is interested in research and development at the frontiers of science and technology, specifically in the domain of Artificial Intelligence, and translating R&D work into operational applications for the Home Team. What you will be working on

The jobholder will be responsible for the following, but not limited to: • Conduct research in frontier artificial intelligence technologies including LLMs, generative AI, multi-modal AI, XAI and AI Safety and alignment. • Design, develop and evaluate novel AI solutions and algorithms that can be applied to real-world problems. • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify opportunities, develop solutions, and deploy them in practical applications. • Collaborate with partners from the industry, academia and various government entities in AI R&D projects. • Publish research papers in leading conferences and journals and contribute to the development of AI technologies. • Supervise interns, associates and communities of interest in research and development work.

What we are looking for

Candidates should possess: • PhD in Computer Sciences, AI, Machine Learning or related fields, with relevant working experience in R&D. • Proven track record of research and development in fronter AI technologies including publications in leading conferences and journals. • Experience with large-scale AI models including LLMs and generative AI. • Excellent programming skills in Python and PyTorch. Candidate characteristics: • Able to work well independently and in teams when necessary. • Willingness to explore and venture into new emerging research fields with the ability to think creatively and outside of the box. • Possess strong analytical and critical thinking skills. • Strong verbal and written scientific communication to articulate ideas and collaborate with both internal and external researchers and engineers. • Passionate about bridging the gap between research and real-world technological applications. • Bold enough to try and fail, while having fun in the process. All new hires are appointed on a two-year contract in the first instance and will be assessed and considered for permanent tenure over time, based on performance.
