What the role is

The School of Engineering at Republic Polytechnic is seeking motivated and creative Research Staff, with Industrial Design experience, to support the design and development of 3D-printed modular joinery systems for 12 months. The role involves design, prototyping, and validation of innovative joinery concepts, with emphasis on functionality, durability, aesthetics, and sustainable fabrication methods.

What you will be working on

Design & Development:
Design & Develop CAD models of modular joinery systems using Rhino, SolidWorks, or Fusion 360. Optimize designs for manufacturability and strength through 3D printing. Explore material options that support lightweight and sustainable outcomes.
 
Prototyping & Fabrication:
Produce and refine joinery prototypes using additive manufacturing technologies (FDM, SLA, SLS). Conduct iterative prototyping cycles to improve performance and usability. Evaluate part tolerances, surface finishes, and mechanical fit.
 
Testing & Validation:
Perform mechanical testing of joints for load-bearing capacity, stability, and repeatability. Document findings in technical reports and support knowledge dissemination. Work with the team to ensure designs meet both functional and aesthetic standards.
 
Teaching Assistance & Coaching:
Coach engineering design interns, providing guidance on design methods, prototyping, and project workflows.
 
Assist in the preparation and mentoring of student teams for design competitions, including design reviews, prototype refinement, and presentation support.

What we are looking for

•    Qualification in Industrial Design or related disciplines, with a good portfolio in furniture design, generative design, and aesthetics.
•    Proficiency in Rhino 3D and Grasshopper Suite is mandatory; familiarity with other CAD tools is advantageous.
•    Track record of projects related to inclusivity and support for persons with disabilities is desirable.
•    Strong aesthetic sensibility and design identity in furniture or product design.
•    Ability to work independently as well as within a small collaborative team.
•    Candidates with design awards or competition recognition will be given preference.
