What the role is
The Population Statistics Section obtains individual level data from administrative sources to compile population indicators and monitor demographic trends in Singapore. Since the individual level data were collected for administrative and operational purposes, they require additional processing and transformation into suitable formats for efficient compilation and analysis. The section also performs projections on the sizing and profile of Singapore's population and households, to enable policy planning and decision making within the government.
What you will be working on
This project entails:
1. Developing Python scripts to compile demographic indicators to identify and track demographic trends (e.g. on marriage, marital dissolutions, fertility) within the Singapore population. Compilation are to be done according to existing processing requirements (currently detailed in SAS programs).
2. Developing Python and VBA scripts to perform population and household projections according to existing methodology.
3. Explore alternative methodologies to perform household projections.
Through this project, the intern will gain an understanding of the processes involved in producing demographic indicators and explore various methods to perform household projections. There will be opportunity for real-world application of programming skills.
