The Visiting Fellow will undertake research on Southeast Asia’s energy transitions within the broader framework of a green recovery, focusing on the nexus between energy and climate and the advancement of regional energy cooperation. The position will entail analysing the political, economic, social, technological, and/or policy dimensions of planned energy transitions in the region. Country‑specific expertise within Southeast Asia will be considered an asset. Secondary areas of research may include, but are not limited to, climate governance — including carbon markets and sustainable finance — low‑carbon technologies, and energy geopolitics.

Key responsibilities include:

• Conduct research and provide analysis in consultation with the Coordinator(s).

• Contribute regularly to ISEAS’ research products such as Fulcrum commentary, Perspective, and Trends-in-Southeast Asia series.

• Assist Coordinator(s) in managing external grants and stakeholder expectations.

• Assist Coordinator(s) in liaising and coordinating the programme’s research agenda.

• Assist in the conceptualisation and conduct of the annual Southeast Asia Climate Outlook Survey.

• Contribute to ISEAS’ collective research efforts (media engagements, briefings to government agencies, overseas visitors and delegations, and reports).

• Plan and organize seminars, workshops, and outreach activities in accordance with the Institute’s mission.

Requirements:

• A PhD degree in Climate Science, Climate Policy, Environmental Science, Energy, Public Policy; International Relations; Economics or related disciplines (a relevant Masters’ degree with work experience may be considered too).

• At least 5 years of experience in climate change-related research.

• Strong interest in the nexus between climate change and energy.

• Strong interdisciplinary work with good track record in research and publications.

• Strong communication and writing skills in English; working knowledge of other Southeast Asian languages will be an advantage.

• Team player with good interpersonal and networking skills.
