What the role is
The Wildlife Trade branch in Animal & Veterinary Service (AVS) Cluster implements and enforces the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) regulations, ensuring that wildlife trade in Singapore is safe and sustainable.
What you will be working on
We are seeking a skilled personnel to develop a comprehensive reference database of chemical signatures for tropical hardwood specimens using Direct Analysis in Real-Time – Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry (DART-TOFMS). The successful candidate will work in a dynamic environment and contribute to building a reference database for wood identification and authentication.
Key responsibilities includes:
Prepare and process wood samples from various tropical hardwood species for DART-TOFMS analysis following established protocols
Operate and maintain the DART-TOFMS instrument to analyse chemical profiles of wood specimens
Document and compile mass spectrum data into a structured database format
Perform quality control checks and validate experimental results
Assist in interpreting chemical profiles and identifying distinctive markers for different wood species
Maintain detailed laboratory records and prepare technical reports
What we are looking for
Postgraduate qualifications in Chemistry, specifically in analytical or Organic Chemistry or related field is preferred
Demonstrated knowledge and experience in operating mass spectrometry equipment and interpreting mass spectrometry data
Proficiency in chemical profile analysis and data interpretation
Experience with laboratory data management systems
Strong analytical skills and attention to detail
Excellent documentation and report writing skills
Good project management skills
Interest in tropical plants and wood science
Knowledge of wood chemistry or plant biochemistry is preferred
