What the role is

The Graduate Industry Traineeship Programme within the Public Service (GRIT@Gov) aims to provide fresh graduates with opportunities to gain industry-relevant skills and experience that can strengthen their employability to take up full time roles in the sector. The Legal Aid Bureau (LAB) is a department in the Ministry of Law. We provide legal representation, advice and assistance in civil matters to persons of limited means under the Legal Aid and Advice Act 1995. As a member of the Operational Policy and Data Analytics Unit, you will be providing support for LAB’s data analytics and policy projects. You will acquire and be able to put into practice policy formulation, analysis and writing, and data collection, cleaning and analytics skills to improve LAB’s systems and operations, and make recommendations on improvements to legal aid services and more generally on access to justice. As part of this work, you will also engage internal and external stakeholders (e.g., Ministry of Law departments, government ministries, universities, vendors, non-governmental organizations, etc).

What you will be working on

You will collaborate with our Legal Officers in the following areas: 1. To be assigned to the Operational Policy and Data Analytics unit (OPDA) and assist with policy reviews and other projects under the supervision of your unit’s supervisors or team lead, including conducting research, collating relevant data and engaging with internal and external stakeholders. 2. To assist the team lead in managing, implementing and optimising operational policy initiatives. 3. To undertake such other duties as may be relevant for the discharge of your duties, and appropriate to your interest or growth areas, such as exploring the use of information technology for OPDA’s work.

What we are looking for

*Key Competencies* 1. University Degree, preferably in areas requiring analytical skills and research, communication skills and a solid grasp of societal systems, such as social sciences and humanities, economics, political science, or law. 2. Candidates must havebasic data analytical skills – i.e. in data collection, cleaning and organisation, analysis, and visualisation; and be able to use Excel and Powerpoint with ease. Candidates who are familiar with SQL and are able to use other types of data analytics or AI tools will be at an advantage. *Personal Traits/Work Experience* 1. Passion to help the less privileged, compassion for the less fortunate. 2. Ability to work well with others in a team. 3. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 4. Creative, innovative, interested in trying new things and self-improvement.

Eligibility for GRIT@Gov traineeship

The GRaduate Industry Traineeship Programme within the Public Service (GRIT@Gov) aims to provide fresh graduates with opportunities to gain industry-relevant skills and experience that can strengthen their employability to take up full time roles in the sector.

All trainees must fulfil the following criteria:

  • Singapore Citizen or Permanent Resident; and
  • Graduated or graduating in 2024 or 2025 from Universities, Polytechnics, the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) and other Educational Institutions (e.g. private universities and overseas institutions); or
  • Graduated earlier from above institutions and completed National Service in 2024 or 2025.

Trainees who complete their studies from Universities, Polytechnics, the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) or other Educational Institutions within 2025 but who will only receive their qualification/certification award in 2026 are eligible for the programme as well.
