The GRaduate Industry Traineeship Programme within the Public Service (GRIT@Gov) aims to provide fresh graduates with opportunities to gain industry-relevant skills and experience that can strengthen their employability to take up full time roles in the sector.
This traineeship with the Public Defender's Office (PDO) Criminal Defence Team offers exposure to criminal law practice within the public service context. The trainee will develop foundational legal research and analytical skills whilst supporting the work of the public defenders in the delivery of criminal defence services to eligible accused persons. The role provides insight into criminal litigation processes, case management, and the unique challenges of criminal defence aid work. The trainee will gain experience in legal writing, case analysis and case management systems.
Please note that this traineeship does not count towards practice training requirements for the purposes of admission to the Singapore Bar under the Legal Profession Act.

What the role is
What you will be working on
As a trainee with the Criminal Defence Team, you will:
• Conduct legal research on criminal law issues, precedents, and procedural matters
• Assist in drafting legal documents including submissions, applications, and correspondence
• Provide case support by reviewing case files, organising evidence, and preparing case summaries
• Shadow public defenders to observe court proceedings and client interactions
• Support case preparation activities including witness statement analysis and chronology preparation
• Assist with case management, file management, and knowledge management systems
• Participate in team discussions on case strategy and legal developments
What we are looking for
This is an entry-level position suitable for candidates with:
• A law degree (LLB or Juris Doctor) from a recognised university
• Strong analytical and research capabilities
• Excellent written communication skills
• Attention to detail and ability to work with confidential information
• Interest in criminal law and public service
• Ability to work effectively in a team environment
• Proficiency in legal research databases (e.g., LawNet) and Microsoft Office applications
Prior experience through internships, mooting, or legal clinic work would be advantageous but is not essential. Candidates should demonstrate genuine interest in criminal law practice and commitment to supporting access to justice.
