What the role is

The traineeship is with the Employment Standards Enforcement Department with the Labour Relations and Workplaces Division’s (LRWD). LRWD's key functions include to enforce employment legislation, preserve workplace harmony, and advocate progressive workplace practices. Employment Standards Enforcement (ESE) enforces the Employment Act through inspections and investigations of workplaces to ensure that basic employment standards are complied with. We also oversee the implementation of two national initiatives, namely WorkRight and Progressive Wage Model (PWM) to ensure that the employment rights of low-wage Singaporeans are protected and that both employers and employees are aware of their employment rights and obligations under core employment legislation such as the Employment Act and the CPF Act.

What you will be working on

Project Title: Development of AI tool to transform investigation This traineeship offers an exciting opportunity to develop an AI-powered investigation helper that will transform how case assessments are conducted. The successful candidate will work on developing an AI tool capable of analysing complex case information and providing evidence-based recommendations for investigation outcomes by leveraging historical case information, customer interactions and existing Standard Operation Procedures (SOPs). Roles & Responsibilites: AI Development - Design and develop an AI solution, incorporating natural language processing capabilities into a user-friendly application - Conduct system testing and validation to ensure accuracy and reliability of AI-generated recommendations - Document development processes for future maintenance and enhancement Knowledge Management - Structure and organise historical case knowledge to optimise AI learning and recommendation accuracy - Collaborate with investigation teams to understand operational requirements and user needs - Develop data preprocessing workflows to ensure consistent input quality for the AI system Preferred Skills & Abilities: - Experience in AI/ML development with proficiency in Python and machine learning libraries - Proficient in Natural Language Processing (NLP), document processing, prompt engineering, and LLM fine-tuning techniques - Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure) for model deployment - Strong coding practices with ability to write clean, documented, and maintainable code - Understanding of AI ethics and responsible AI development principles - Excellent communication and project management skills for cross-functional collaboration

What we are looking for

• Strong foundation in Python coding with attention to writing clear, well-structured codes • Familiarity with machine learning concepts and knowledge of AI ethics and responsible development practices • Interest or some exposure to Natural Language Processing (NLP) or document processing (through coursework, projects, or self-learning) • Basic understanding of cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure) • Hands-on experience with prompt engineering or LLM fine-tuning (advantageous) • Previous internship or project experience in AI/ML development would be advantageous • Good communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills • Passion for enforcement work in the public service • Good analytical skills • Able to work effectively both individually and in a team

Eligibility for GRIT@Gov traineeship

The GRaduate Industry Traineeship Programme within the Public Service (GRIT@Gov) aims to provide fresh graduates with opportunities to gain industry-relevant skills and experience that can strengthen their employability to take up full time roles in the sector.

All trainees must fulfil the following criteria:

  • Singapore Citizen or Permanent Resident; and
  • Graduated or graduating in 2024 or 2025 from Universities, Polytechnics, the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) and other Educational Institutions (e.g. private universities and overseas institutions); or
  • Graduated earlier from above institutions and completed National Service in 2024 or 2025.

Trainees who complete their studies from Universities, Polytechnics, the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) or other Educational Institutions within 2025 but who will only receive their qualification/certification award in 2026 are eligible for the programme as well.
