What the role is

This traineeship is with the Employment Standards and Labour Relations department (ESLR) with the Workplace Policy and Strategy Division (WPSD). WPSD develops policies covering a wide spectrum of issues, including strengthening workplace and occupational safety practices through our legislation, guidelines, standards and advisories, as well as ensuring the proper management and well-being of foreign workers. In addition, WPSD monitors the employment landscape to address the needs of the changing workforce and to foster a more inclusive workplace. The Employment Standards and Labour Relations (ESLR) department develops policies to strengthen labour standards, employment laws, and fair employment practices. The work here aims to foster workplace harmony, adapt to evolving societal views of work, and prepare for long-term shifts in economic, demographic, and technological changes.

What you will be working on

The candidate will be required to conduct and present research through basic data analysis, international scans, and stakeholder engagements on various areas relating to work and workplaces, with the aim of informing tripartite discussions on forward-looking issues. Examples of these areas include: • How we can ensure that PMEs continue to receive useful support in the careers and workplaces • How we can ensure AI is deployed responsibly in the workplace • How we can manage and meet evolving worker aspirations for work-life harmony while ensuring our workplaces continue to thrive and be productive Basic data analysis skills (Excel) and some familiarity with business and economic concepts will be useful.

• Strong critical thinking and systems thinking skills • Ability to write and articulate views clearly, systematically and effectively • Ability to build networks and engage stakeholders internally and externally, and at different levels, to understand their perspectives and concerns, and to find alignment • Keen intellectual interest in social and economic issues at large, and employment issues in particular

Eligibility for GRIT@Gov traineeship

The GRaduate Industry Traineeship Programme within the Public Service (GRIT@Gov) aims to provide fresh graduates with opportunities to gain industry-relevant skills and experience that can strengthen their employability to take up full time roles in the sector.

All trainees must fulfil the following criteria:

  • Singapore Citizen or Permanent Resident; and
  • Graduated or graduating in 2024 or 2025 from Universities, Polytechnics, the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) and other Educational Institutions (e.g. private universities and overseas institutions); or
  • Graduated earlier from above institutions and completed National Service in 2024 or 2025.

Trainees who complete their studies from Universities, Polytechnics, the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) or other Educational Institutions within 2025 but who will only receive their qualification/certification award in 2026 are eligible for the programme as well.
