What the role is

The Data & AI Associate traineeship is a 6-month programme for recent fresh graduates keen to apply artificial intelligence and data analytics to real-world public sector challenges. You will join MTI Economics Division – Data & AI Office, working alongside Data Scientists and Data Analysts to build AI and data tools that enhance MTI’s productivity and transform the way we work. This role emphasises hands-on AI development, with opportunities to gain exposure to the entire lifecycle of AI and data products – from problem scoping and data preparation to prototyping, deployment, and user adoption.

What you will be working on

1. AI Development and Integration o Assist in developing AI applications (e.g., chatbots, intelligent assistants, statistics retrieval systems). o Contribute to workflows and pipelines that integrate AI models into MTI’s digital ecosystem. o Support pilot testing and iteration with end-users to improve app usability and performance. o Support the design, training, and evaluation of machine learning and generative AI models. o Experiment with natural language processing, retrieval systems, and prediction algorithms for MTI use cases. o Test, validate, and refine model outputs to ensure accuracy, fairness, and robustness. 2. Data Preparation and Analysis o Collect, clean, and transform structured and unstructured datasets for model training and testing. o Conduct exploratory data analysis to generate insights and features for data products. o Build dashboards and reports that complement AI model outputs. 3. Applied Research and Collaboration o Scan and experiment with emerging AI tools, libraries, and techniques, assessing their applicability to MTI’s context. o Work with Data Scientists and Engineers to troubleshoot, optimise, and scale models. o Partner with MTI divisions to translate policy or business problems into AI-enabled solutions. o Document methodologies, experiments, and lessons learnt to strengthen AI knowledge base.

What we are looking for

• Tertiary education with a degree in Computer Science, Data Science, AI, Statistics, or related disciplines. • Technical Skills: o Proficiency in Python with some familiarity with cloud deployments (especially on AWS cloud). o Familiarity with SQL and data wrangling. o Understanding of machine learning concepts and generative AI / Large Language Models (LLMs). o Exposure to Business Intelligence tools (e.g., Tableau, AWS QuickSight) will be an added advantage. • Soft Skills: o Strong analytical and problem-solving mindset. o Ability to learn quickly and adapt to evolving technologies. o Strong communication skills; comfortable working with both technical and non-technical stakeholders. o Collaborative team player.

Eligibility for GRIT@Gov traineeship

The GRaduate Industry Traineeship Programme within the Public Service (GRIT@Gov) aims to provide fresh graduates with opportunities to gain industry-relevant skills and experience that can strengthen their employability to take up full time roles in the sector.

All trainees must fulfil the following criteria:

  • Singapore Citizen or Permanent Resident; and
  • Graduated or graduating in 2024 or 2025 from Universities, Polytechnics, the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) and other Educational Institutions (e.g. private universities and overseas institutions); or
  • Graduated earlier from above institutions and completed National Service in 2024 or 2025.

Trainees who complete their studies from Universities, Polytechnics, the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) or other Educational Institutions within 2025 but who will only receive their qualification/certification award in 2026 are eligible for the programme as well.
