What the role is

Officers in the Foreign Service serve to safeguard our nation's interests internationally as well as assist Singaporeans in need abroad. As a Foreign Service Trainee, you will have the opportunity to develop your professional skills and gain exposure to this work by experiencing first-hand what MFA undertakes at headquarters.

What you will be working on

As a Foreign Service Trainee, you will support MFA's operations by assisting with research, analysis, and administrative functions. Depending on deployment, you will work alongside experienced officers to gain exposure in various aspects of policy work, as well as administrative and corporate functions in MFA’s headquarters.

What we are looking for

To meet the challenges of this role, you must be a Singaporean and have/be • A keen interest in international affairs • Versatile and adaptable to different environments • Strong analytical skills and conceptual abilities • Excellent written and oral communication skills • Strong ability to engage people at all levels • Good planning and organisation skills • Creative problem-solvers who are able to think on their feet You will work in a fast-paced and highly dynamic environment that requires the ability to manage multiple priorities and stakeholders simultaneously. Shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo a series of tests as well as a panel interview to determine their suitability for the traineeship.

Eligibility for GRIT@Gov traineeship

The GRaduate Industry Traineeship Programme within the Public Service (GRIT@Gov) aims to provide fresh graduates with opportunities to gain industry-relevant skills and experience that can strengthen their employability to take up full time roles in the sector.

All trainees must fulfil the following criteria:

  • Singapore Citizen or Permanent Resident; and
  • Graduated or graduating in 2024 or 2025 from Universities, Polytechnics, the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) and other Educational Institutions (e.g. private universities and overseas institutions); or
  • Graduated earlier from above institutions and completed National Service in 2024 or 2025.

Trainees who complete their studies from Universities, Polytechnics, the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) or other Educational Institutions within 2025 but who will only receive their qualification/certification award in 2026 are eligible for the programme as well.
