What the role is

As a GRIT trainee in the Coastal Protection Department, you will join a team of engineers & planners to develop strategies and engineering solutions to protect Singapore's coastline against flood risk due to climate-related challenges of sea level rise and intensifying rainfall patterns. Through this role, you will be given exposure and training, ranging from project management, engineering design principles, stakeholder engagement, contract administration, and flood risk assessment methodologies. You will gain hands-on experience with Singapore's coastal protection frameworks while working on projects that directly contribute to national climate adaptation efforts. The position offers opportunities to collaborate with engineering consultants, government agencies, and diverse stakeholders on technically complex infrastructure projects that positively impact communities & stakeholders.

What you will be working on

Technical Analysis: Contribute to flood risk assessments, environmental impact evaluations and the development of coastal protection strategies using analytical tools and methodologies. Engineering Study Support: Assist team members in reviewing assessments and findings by engineering consultants to ensure studies align with coastal protection requirements and project timelines. Project Administration: Support the management of site investigations, surveys, and consultancy contracts by assisting with tender processes, coordinating with engineering consultants and monitoring project milestones to ensure compliance with technical specifications and regulatory standards. Stakeholder Coordination: Assist in consultation activities with relevant agencies and stakeholders to gather inputs for incorporating into coastal protection planning processes. Documentation and Reporting: Support the preparation of technical reports, project documentation and presentations for various stakeholders including government agencies and community stakeholders.

What we are looking for

Educational Qualifications: Degree in Coastal Engineering, Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering or related engineering disciplines. Technical Competencies: Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications. Familiarity with Geographic Information System (GIS) platforms and interest in coastal, hydrology & hydraulics domain would be advantageous for this entry-level position. Analytical Skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with keen attention to detail. Interest in coastal processes, environmental assessment, and infrastructure planning methodologies. Communication Abilities: Good written and verbal communication skills with the capacity to prepare clear technical documentation and engage confidently with diverse stakeholders. Personal Qualities: Self-motivated individual who demonstrates the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams. Strong organisational skills and ability to manage competing priorities. Relevant Experience: Prior internship or project experience in engineering, environmental studies, infrastructure planning, or related technical fields would be beneficial.

Eligibility for GRIT@Gov traineeship

The GRaduate Industry Traineeship Programme within the Public Service (GRIT@Gov) aims to provide fresh graduates with opportunities to gain industry-relevant skills and experience that can strengthen their employability to take up full time roles in the sector.

All trainees must fulfil the following criteria:

  • Singapore Citizen or Permanent Resident; and
  • Graduated or graduating in 2024 or 2025 from Universities, Polytechnics, the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) and other Educational Institutions (e.g. private universities and overseas institutions); or
  • Graduated earlier from above institutions and completed National Service in 2024 or 2025.

Trainees who complete their studies from Universities, Polytechnics, the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) or other Educational Institutions within 2025 but who will only receive their qualification/certification award in 2026 are eligible for the programme as well.
