What the role is

Join URA’s DPLab, which spearheads the Whole-of-Government Urban Planning & Design Technology Centre of Excellence’s (URBEX) efforts to research and develop smart urban planning and design technologies through Policy-Ops-Tech collaborations. DPLab is a multi-disciplinary team with capabilities in data policy, governance, strategy, management and engineering, product strategy, business analysis, software engineering, cloud engineering, urban design technologies, 2D/3D geospatial analytics, data science, AI/ML, and modelling and simulation. We collaborate closely with planners, architects and policymakers to develop digital solutions and analytics to provide insights for Singapore’s urban planning challenges.

What you will be working on

What you'll do:

  • Develop Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions for the Urban Planning & Design domain by working collaboratively with internal user groups (Urban Planners, Architects, Data Engineers, Data Scientists, Software Developers, etc.) and WOG agencies in the scoping, architecting, development, deployment and integration of machine learning or AI solutions using cloud or on-premise infrastructure
  • Support the training of URA community in the use of AI technologies
  • Engage stakeholders across departments and external agencies to gather use cases and requirements, document user feedback, and support solution roll-outs with feedback loops

What you'll gain:

By the end of this traineeship, you will have:

  • Hands-on experience in (i) developing with state-of-the-art AI / Machine Learning (including Generative AI) technologies to enhance Urban Planning and Design in an agile team set-up, and (ii) working with cloud infrastructure and services to deploy machine learning models, pipelines, or solutions (e.g. Microsoft Azure/AWS)
  • Understanding of modern software architecture patterns and principles
  • Practical problem-solving skills through supporting real-world urban planning and design applications
  • General understanding about urban planning work and devise solutions that drive desirable planning outcomes
  • Strong communication and collaboration abilities from engaging with diverse stakeholders
  • Understanding of how digital solutions support public sector operations and strategic objectives

What we are looking for

  • Singapore Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Graduated in 2024 to 2025 with a Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related ICT disciplines
  • Familiarity with Natural Language Processing, Knowledge-based Systems (KBS) and Generative AI projects
  • Experience in developing and optimising machine learning or AI models using common Python packages such as scikit-learn, TensorFlow, or PyTorch
  • Strong analytical thinking and eagerness to learn new technologies
  • Good communication skills and ability to work collaboratively

Eligibility for GRIT@Gov traineeship

The GRaduate Industry Traineeship Programme within the Public Service (GRIT@Gov) aims to provide fresh graduates with opportunities to gain industry-relevant skills and experience that can strengthen their employability to take up full time roles in the sector.

All trainees must fulfil the following criteria:

  • Singapore Citizen or Permanent Resident; and
  • Graduated or graduating in 2024 or 2025 from Universities, Polytechnics, the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) and other Educational Institutions (e.g. private universities and overseas institutions); or
  • Graduated earlier from above institutions and completed National Service in 2024 or 2025.

Trainees who complete their studies from Universities, Polytechnics, the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) or other Educational Institutions within 2025 but who will only receive their qualification/certification award in 2026 are eligible for the programme as well.
