What the role is

The Asian Civilisations Museum is the only museum in the region devoted to exploring the rich artistic heritage of Asia, especially the ancestral cultures of Singaporeans. Opened in 1997 and in its present building by the Singapore River since 2003, the museum traces its roots to the Raffles Museum, founded in the middle of 19th century. ACM focuses on the many historical and artistic connections between the cultures of Asia, and between Asia and the world.

Singapore’s history as a port city that brought people together from all over the world is used as a means of examining the history of Asia. Objects on display tell stories of the trade and the exchange of ideas that were the result of international commerce, as well as the flow of religions and faith through Asia.

Asian Civilisation Museum manages the Peranakan Museum. The Peranakan Museum (TPM) explores the art and culture of Peranakan communities in Southeast Asia and possesses one of the finest and most comprehensive collections of Peranakan objects. Galleries on three floors illustrate the cultural traditions and distinctive visual arts of Peranakans.

In this role, you will contribute to the delivery of inspiring and engaging museum experiences by planning and managing exhibitions, gallery displays, museum rotation projects and gallery maintenance for the Asian Civilisations Museum / Peranakan Museum. You will handle artefacts and work out the best way to display them with fellow passionate museum professionals.

What you will be working on

Responsibilities:

Exhibition Development

  • Plan and manage ACM/TPM’s exhibitions and gallery rotation projects, in aspects of design development, conservation and mounting works, fabrication and site renovation, artefact installations and security of gallery displays
  • Ensure effective engagement and communication with stakeholders, designers, contractors and other project partners such as lenders, curators, project managers, collection registrars etc.

Project Management

  • Work with a team of exhibition technical services officers to ensure successful and timely delivery of all works
  • Manage the allocated budgets, procurement work and project timeline for the above-mentioned services
  • Work closely with other departments to coordinate all aspects of each project
  • Any other administrative and ad hoc duties as assigned 

Logistics, Operations and Collections Management

  • Plan and organise all related logistics and administrative matters, including procurement of services / goods where required
  • Ensure safe and secure handling of artefacts during installation and de-installation of exhibitions and gallery displays for refresh of content and travelling exhibitions

Artefact Management and Exhibition Maintenance

  • Plan and manage regular gallery maintenance programme including display conservation cleaning, maintenance of showcases, lighting and interactives, as well as environment and pest controls

What we are looking for

  • Preferably at least 3 years of relevant experience, preferably in the art and culture industry
  • Efficient, organised, highly motivated with ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment
  • Flexible and creative thinker, good team leader and problem solver with capacity for hard work
  • Meticulous and attentive to details with regards to technical drawings, environmental conditions, and installations
  • Fashion and/or textile display knowledge will be added advantage
  • Experience and knowledge in UX/UI design will be added advantage
  • Interest in fashion, art, design, and history; sensitivity to historical artefacts
