Senior Research Scientist / Research Scientist (Climate Change Impacts)

Fixed Terms
Closing on 09 Dec 2025

What the role is

The Centre for Climate Research Singapore (CCRS) is a division of the Meteorological Service Singapore (MSS). At CCRS, our mission is to advance scientific understanding of tropical climate variability and change and its associated weather systems affecting Singapore and the wider Southeast Asia region, so that the knowledge and expertise can benefit decision makers and the community. Our vision is to be a world leading centre in tropical climate and weather research focusing on the Southeast Asia region.

Located within CCRS’s Department of Climate Research (DCR), the Climate Change Impacts (CCI) Branch focuses its research on four key priority areas that have been developed in consultation with Singapore stakeholder agencies: (a) sea level rise; (b) urban climate change; (c) water supply and flood management; and (d) impact of warming trends on the heat and human health nexus. Together, these research efforts will support Singapore stakeholders’ planning and decision-making processes on climate change adaptation.
CCRS is offering an exciting job opportunity for an experienced sea level scientist with a strong background in oceanography or a related discipline to join the CCI Branch to contribute to a better understanding of sea level rise and variability, especially future projections of sea level rise and its impacts.

What you will be working on

The specific job responsibilities of this position include:

  • Lead and carry out research related to sea level rise and future sea level projections
  • Advance understanding of the mechanisms for sea level rise and variability in coastal areas around Singapore and Southeast Asia, including the cryosphere response, as well as the coastal implications across the southeast Asia tectonically active region
  • Quantify the mechanisms for changes in the rate of sea level rise in Singapore and its components (e.g. thermal expansion, contribution from glaciers and ice sheets; vertical land movement) over the period with available observations since 1970s
  • Establish relationships with international experts in the area of sea level rise and coastal inundation in order to support and complement research projects undertaken locally
  • Explore the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) / Machine Learning (ML) in sea level projections applications
  • Contribute to the communication of research to stakeholders.
  • Contribute to the development of research plans and strategies
  • Contribute to the mentoring of junior scientists within the team; and
  • Publish research outcomes in peer-reviewed publications and present findings at international meetings.

What we are looking for

The job might be for you if you possess the following:

  • A PhD in a relevant physical science such as oceanography, meteorology, mathematics or physics
  • 5 years post graduate research experience and (preferably) a recognised expert in their field
  • A good understanding of the complexity of sea level rise issues across the various components
  • Experience in the application of ocean models in climate change applications
  • Demonstrate ability to undertake research work both individually and as part of a team
  • Proven record of success as demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals; and
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal and across technical and non-technical materials
  • Ability to work effectively to deadlines on individual projects and as part of a diverse team.
  • Interest and passion to deliver relevant R&D for societal benefits.
  • Ability to network effectively with the local and international research community.
  • Ability to engage and communicate with scientists and stakeholders from diverse communities

As part of the shortlisting process for this role, you may be required to complete a medical declaration and/or undergo further assessment.
