MTI Internship: Strengthen the public’s understanding of energy pricing

Internship
Closing on 05 Feb 2026

What the role is

Energy Markets and Infrastructure Division (EMID) - Strengthen the public’s understanding of energy pricing through education and engagement

What you will be working on

The Energy Markets and Infrastructure Division (EMID) plays a key role in creating an energy system that is resilient, cost-competitive, and ready to transition to a low carbon future. We take the lead in: (a) Planning for Singapore’s energy transition, including energy demand and supply and the corresponding impact on infrastructure requirements, system costs and electricity prices; (b) strengthening Singapore’s gas and electricity markets; and (c) developing horizontal enablers for the energy sector e.g. manpower and skills development, energy public engagement strategy. To navigate the energy transition, public understanding and support are essential. We hope Singaporeans can (i) understand Singapore’s decarbonisation goals, constraints and trade-offs; (ii) appreciate the Government’s efforts in managing the energy trilemma of security, cost-competitiveness and sustainability; and (ii) take action to prepare for the transition. In particular, we need to strengthen the public’s understanding of energy pricing, its components, and how prices could be impacted by changing energy demand and supply profiles. The final project deliverable will contribute to MTI and EMA’s efforts in garnering public support for the energy transition, and inform decisions surfaced to MTI’s senior management relating to energy education and engagement. The internship will involve conducting independent research (e.g. jurisdictional scans, interviews) to gain insights into other countries’ engagement strategies on energy issues, especially energy pricing, and recommending ways to seek the public’s buy-in for the energy transition in Singapore’s context. Beyond this project, there will be opportunities for the intern to be exposed to challenging policies that shape our electricity market.

What we are looking for

• Ability to conduct independent research and informational interviews in a greenfield area and present findings succinctly and analytically in writing • Comfortable sourcing for and participating in engagements with external interlocutors (e.g., think tanks, international organisations) • Prior experience in the energy sector would be a plus, but not a requirement
