MTI Internship: Advancing the ASEAN Power Grid during Singapore’s ASEAN Chairman
Internship

What you will be working on
This internship provides valuable learning opportunities to hone one’s policy development (on the pricing and development of cross-border electricity imports projects) and international relations (through bilateral and regional engagements) skillsets.
Low-carbon electricity imports is a key decarbonisation pathway for Singapore. It also contributes to the realisation of the ASEAN Power Grid (APG), a regional initiative to interconnect the power systems of ASEAN countries through cross-border power cables. The APG plays a critical role in supporting resilience, energy security and sustainability for the region. It will allow us to maximise the region’s diverse renewable energy potential, by matching renewable energy abundant areas with areas with demand.
In 2026, Singapore will take on the Vice-Chairmanship role of ASEAN, before taking over the ASEAN Chairmanship role in 2027. This will be an important opportunity for Singapore to contribute to shaping regional cooperation and advancing regional energy connectivity through the APG development. This is particularly pertinent, as the region is facing rapid economic growth, rising energy demand, and the climate crisis requires us to quickly transition to low-carbon energy sources to avoid the devastating impact of climate change.
The Energy Partnerships Division (EPD) within MTI’s Energy and Carbon cluster is responsible for formulating Singapore’s energy policies and strategies, to support Singapore’s energy transition by securing low-carbon electricity imports from our region and building an interconnected regional grid.
As part of your internship, you will be part of the EPD team that engages ASEAN Member States and other regional stakeholders to advance our energy priorities for the development of the APG. You will also be involved in shaping Singapore’s energy priorities as Vice-Chairman of ASEAN in 2026, in the lead up to our ASEAN Chairmanship in 2027.
What we are looking for
• Keen interest in global energy/carbon developments, regional politics, and international affairs
• Comfortable dealing with research work and writing
• Good communication and stakeholder engagement skills
