This internship project is designed for an undergraduate level, with specific interest in applying foundational research skills. This role is ideal for a conscientious undergraduate student with foundational training in social science research methods, a keen attention to detail, and proficiency in data management software (e.g., Excel or basic statistical packages). A strong ethical sense and sensitivity to working in court-related contexts are essential. The intern will focus on data management and descriptive analysis of existing co-mediation (an alternative dispute resolution service conducted jointly between a court counsellor and a mediator) outcomes and will provide crucial support in the development and preparation of a new research instrument for the Syariah Court.

What you will be working on
There are two phases of this project:
Phase 1: Foundational Data Management and Descriptive Analysis
The intern will be responsible for reviewing the existing co-mediation survey data and tracking spreadsheet for advanced analysis and generating key descriptive findings.
Objectives:
1. Data Cleaning and Quality Control: Execute thorough cleaning of the raw data, including checking for missing values, standardizing responses, and performing data transformations necessary for analysis.
2. Descriptive Analysis and Visualization: Conduct comprehensive descriptive statistical analysis (frequencies, means, standard deviations) on key outcome variables (e.g., settlement rates, satisfaction levels) and produce clear data visualizations (charts, graphs) for internal reporting.
3. Basic Correlation Mapping: Explore and report on simple bivariate correlations between mediation outcomes and basic demographic variables (e.g., age, gender, case type).
4. Initial Critique Memo: Prepare a short memo summarizing the practical limitations of the current data set encountered during the cleaning process, highlighting variables that are missing or poorly measured.
Deliverable for Phase 1: A cleaned and documented data file, accompanied by a report detailing descriptive findings and visualizations.
Phase 2: Research Instrument and Implementation Support
The intern will support the court counselling team in designing the new, comprehensive data collection instrument for the study of the co-mediation pilot.
Objectives:
1. Literature Review Support: Conduct a targeted review of social science literature to identify best practices for measuring co-mediation efficacy and participant satisfaction in sensitive legal contexts (under supervision).
2. Instrument Drafting Assistance: Contribute to the development of the new instrument by drafting specific sections of the questionnaire and interview guide, focusing on clear, unbiased language.
3. Implementation Documentation: Draft supporting research materials essential for fieldwork, such as:
o Drafting the first version of the participant consent form.
o Creating a detailed manual for data collectors on survey administration and quality checks.
Deliverable: A set of draft support documents (consent form, data collection manual) and a section of the new research instrument, informed by literature review findings.
