Manager / Assistant Manager (Port Health Section)

What the role is

We are looking for highly motivated individuals to join the Port Health Section of the Environmental Public Health Operations Group, Central Regional Office. As a team leader, you will play a diverse and critical role in protecting public health at Singapore’s points of entry, operating in a fast-paced and dynamic environment that requires the ability to manage multiple priorities and engage with various stakeholders simultaneously. You will need to engage in physically demanding activities when required, and able to withstand exposure to various weather conditions.

What you will be working on

Key duties vary depending on the specific area of work assigned, but may generally include:

  • Triaging applications for ship sanitation certificates by identifying and prioritising inbound/outbound ships for inspection, collaborating with shipping agents to verify operational requirements and safety procedures and adjusting inspection deployment plans according to real-time ship information.
  • Boarding vessels using marine ladders (e.g. accommodation ladder, pilot ladder) to conduct sanitation inspections of key areas within the vessel in accordance with International Health Regulations (2005) and to enforce corrective measures when lapses are identified.
  • Supervising a team to lead the day-to-day management of the operations room and to plan shift rosters according to operational demands and priorities, accounting for contingencies and ensuring seamless coverage of duties.
  • Evaluating and issuing port health clearances or quarantine orders for inbound ships in accordance with International Health Regulations (2005).
  • Processing permits relating to the export/import of human remains in accordance with the Infectious Diseases Act/Regulations.
  • Preparing, processing, and recording all financial transactions with meticulous attention to detail under established internal guidelines and regulatory requirements.
  • Conducting investigations into possible offence(s) under the Infectious Diseases Act/Regulations and the Hydrogen Cyanide (Fumigation) Act/Regulations.

What we are looking for

The job might be for you if you possess the following qualities:

  • A minimum of 3 years' working experience in the maritime industry would be advantageous
  • Must be physically fit and capable of performing demanding physical work
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Self-motivated, independent, and resourceful with strong problem-solving abilities
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Able to perform duties on weekends and public holidays
