The Syariah Court (SYC) is a key institution for the Singapore Muslim community and seeks to be a reliable, dynamic and just court which inspires confidence to best serve the Muslim community. The Registry of Muslim Marriages (ROMM) aims to be a world class marriage institution that provides to the building of strong and stable families.
As President-Mediator at SYC, you will conduct mediation sessions for divorce and related matters including maintenance, custody, and access arrangements for children, and division of matrimonial property. Using therapeutic justice approaches, you will help families resolve disputes, record consent orders, and facilitate co-mediation with therapeutic Court Specialists and work in multi-disciplinary case management teams when needed. You may also preside over pre-trial conferences and contested cases.
What you will be working on
Mediation and Family Dispute Resolution
• Conduct mediation sessions for divorce and ancillary matters including maintenance-related claims (i.e. nafkah iddah, mutaah) custody, care and control of and access arrangements for children, division of matrimonial property.
• Handle cases where parties have pronounced divorce but wish to reconcile (“Intention to Rujuk/Reconcile case”) and variation applications as assigned.
• Apply therapeutic justice and trauma-informed approaches whilst maintaining awareness of family dynamics and emotional wellbeing.
• Conduct risk-screening in accordance with checklist and arrange co-mediation with therapeutic Court Specialists when needed.
• Where there is an agreement between parties during the mediation, prepare and draft court orders carefully, assessing their legal feasibility and ensuring parties understand the terms of the agreement. at the conclusion of successful mediations.
Case Management and Adjudication
• Preside over pre-trial conferences and hear contested applications when assigned.
• Exercise judicial discretion in accordance with the Administration of Muslim Law Act (AMLA), relevant subsidiary legislation, and Muslim law principles.
• Conduct proceedings fairly and expeditiously, making sound decisions that promote transparency and efficacy.
• Deliver timely oral and written judgments where required.
• Manage case documentation, file transfers, and administrative tasks including risk screening, referrals to support programmes and statistical reporting.
• Handle enquiries on assigned cases and assist in providing responses to case-related queries.
What we are looking for
• At least 6 to 8 years of relevant experience in mediation work. Preference will be given to candidates with accreditation from the Singapore Mediation Centre, the Singapore International Mediation Institute, or other recognised mediation bodies.
• Knowledge or experience relevant to Muslim marriage and divorce laws.
• Knowledge or experience relevant to Court divorce processes, with emphasis on therapeutic jurisprudence approaches that prioritise family wellbeing alongside legal resolution.
• Training in therapeutic justice principles and trauma-informed practices, with ability to recognise and respond to risk indicators (protection and mental health signs).
• Proficiency in Malay is desirable to serve the community effectively.

• Evaluate cases with reference to the relevant legislations and guidelines, monitor performance metrics and provide recommendations to resolve issues arising from case management
Legal Administration
• Schedule hearings in a timely and efficient manner, optimising the available timeslots for hearings and taking into consideration the time constraints on parties
Service Delivery
• Effectively deliver services, coordinate and manage service cases, from the start of service requests to their resolution, including resolving service challenges and performing service recovery where needed
Personality traits
• Meticulous and detailed in preparing Court documents, including accurate documentation or risk assessments, specialist consultations.
• Ability to adapt to the use of technology and case management systems
