Home Team Science and Technology Agency (HTX)
Senior/ Scientist, AI & Human Behaviour Modelling Scientist ,Human Factors & Sim
Permanent/Contract
Closing on 27 Feb 2026What the role is
The Human Factors & Simulations (HFS) Centre of Expertise at HTX focuses on enhancing Home Team operations through the application of human factors engineering, cognitive science, and simulation-based research. HFS works at the intersection of human performance, technology, and operational environments to optimise decision-making, teamwork, training effectiveness, and human–machine integration across the Home Team.
The successful candidate will research and develop artificial intelligence, behaviour, and crowd simulation models to represent and analyse individual and collective performance in complex operational and training environments relevant to the Home Team. He/she will implement models that capture decision-making, variability, group dynamics, and responses under stress, and apply them to simulation-based training, experimentation, and operational analysis.
The candidate will design performance, behaviour, and crowd models that translate task demands, environmental conditions, and individual or group states into dynamic responses. This includes developing agent-based behaviour representations, crowd movement and interaction models, and decision logic that enable realistic crowd emergence, escalation, and response to interventions within simulated environments.
By integrating AI-driven behaviour and crowd models with simulation platforms, the AI & Behaviour Modelling Scientist will support the development and evaluation of realistic training and analysis scenarios. The candidate will work closely with engineers, researchers, project leads, and HT department users to explain modelling assumptions and limitations, ensuring behaviours remain interpretable, bounded, and aligned with operational objectives.
What you will be working on
The Scientist will be responsible for the following:
• • Research, design, and implement artificial intelligence, human behaviour, and crowd simulation models to represent individual and collective performance in complex operational and training environments relevant to the Home Team.
• Develop agent-based behaviour models, decision logic, and state representations that capture variability, uncertainty, and responses to operational stressors and environmental conditions.
• Design and implement crowd simulation models that represent movement, interaction, congestion, and group dynamics, and study how crowd behaviours emerge and change in response to interventions or environmental constraints.
• Define performance metrics, behavioural indicators, and model parameters that allow human and crowd behaviours to be analysed, compared, and validated within simulation scenarios.
• Support integration of behaviour and crowd models with simulation platforms and runtime systems, working closely with simulation and XR engineers to ensure compatibility, stability, and performance.
• Implement data-driven or rule-based approaches to parameterise, calibrate, and refine behaviour and crowd models using experimental data, scenario assumptions, or domain expertise.
• Conduct verification, validation, and sensitivity analyses to understand model behaviour, limitations, and robustness under different scenario conditions.
• Support the design and execution of simulation-based experiments and trials to study human and crowd performance, including defining experimental variables, scenario injects, and evaluation methods.
• Analyse simulation outputs and logged data to derive insights into behavioural patterns, performance outcomes, and system-level effects, and present findings in a clear and defensible manner.
• Document modelling assumptions, algorithms, parameter choices, and known limitations to support transparency, reproducibility, and responsible use of AI-driven behaviours.
What we are looking for
• At least a bachelor’s degree in computer science, artificial intelligence, cognitive science, psychology, engineering, applied mathematics, or a related field.
• Foundational knowledge of human behaviour, decision-making, or performance modelling concepts, including variability, uncertainty, and context-dependent behaviour.
• Experience with or strong interest in developing agent-based models, behaviour models, or crowd simulation approaches for analysis or simulation applications.
• Experience with or interest in designing and executing simulation-based studies, experiments, or analyses involving human or agent behaviour.
• Experience with programming and computational modelling, including scripting or implementation of algorithms in languages such as Python, C++, or similar.
• Familiarity with data analysis, model evaluation, or validation methods, including basic statistical or computational analysis techniques.
• Passion for solving complex, ill-structured problems while navigating constraints, assumptions, and trade-offs in applied research or engineering settings.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain modelling concepts, assumptions, and results to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Strong analytical, creative, and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail and modelling discipline.
All new hires are appointed on a two-year contract in the first instance and will be assessed and considered for permanent tenure over time, based on performance.
As part of the shortlisting process for this role, you may be required to complete a medical declaration and/or undergo further assessment. All applicants will be updated on the status of their applications within 4 weeks upon closing of the advertisement.
