What the role is

The operating environment of the Public Service is undergoing fundamental and rapid change. The issues we face are complex and multi-faceted, which impact the way the Public Service operates and organises itself. Internally, workforce changes require a new approach to workplace design, while technology’s widespread influence has fundamentally changed the way we conduct our business. To prepare the Public Service for these changes, we need to transform the Public Service workplace into one that is lean, agile and digital. We also need to build a productive, collaborative and joyful workplace culture to meet the needs and aspirations of public officers. We are looking to redesign the workplace experience and create a stimulating and empowering work environment that supports officers’ growth, development and wellbeing. In summary, our objective is to enhance Public Service employee experience, so that we have Public Officers who are inspired, supported, and equipped for the future.

What you will be working on

By joining our #PeoplePurposePossibilities internship, you can play a role in improving the workplace experience of public officers, together with partners across the Whole-of-Government (WOG). You will be part of a team that strategises and implements WOG employee experience initiatives, conducts user research to understand officer needs, and coordinates with stakeholders across agencies to collectively enhance the lived experience of public officers. You will have the opportunity to develop yourself in the following areas: Programme Development and Implementation – You will assist in implementing 1-2 specific employee experience initiatives (such as Well-being@Gov, CoWork@Gov, or Workpal) by supporting project coordination, progress tracking, and basic outcome measurement. You will help prepare project materials, maintain stakeholder databases, and support the monitoring of initiative effectiveness. Additionally, you will contribute to programme ideation by supporting the team in brainstorming new employee experience transformation strategies that enable purposeful and productive work, foster a flexible, collaborative and caring workplace environment, and develop a diverse, agile and skilled workforce across the public service. Through this process, you will help evaluate the impact of current initiatives and participate in brainstorming sessions for programme refinements and enhancements. Research and Insights – You will support user research activities including survey design, focus group facilitation, and basic data analysis to identify officer needs and micro-frictions in employee experience. You will help distil data and insights to identify potential focus areas and contribute to evidence-based solutions. Stakeholder Coordination – You will assist in coordinating with public agencies and partners by preparing meeting materials, following up on action items, maintaining communication channels, and supporting cross-agency collaboration efforts. You will learn to work with diverse stakeholders while understanding their unique contexts and business needs. Skills You Will Develop: Through this internship, you will gain practical experience in understanding the Public Service HR ecosystem, exposure to user research methodologies, experience with cross-agency collaboration, and basic project management and coordination skills. You will also develop technical capabilities in using tech/AI tools like Python and Copilot for tasks such as data processing and analysis, process automation, summarisation of meetings and content creation.
