Manager/ Plant Resource – Singapore Botanic Gardens

What the role is

The Singapore Botanic Gardens (SBG) is one of the world's oldest tropical botanical gardens and one of only three botanic gardens globally to be inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It houses an extensive living collection, including orchids, palms, cycads, gingers, and plants of significant human cultural importance. This role encompasses the management of both plants and personnel within a plant nursery environment, as well as coordination with users of these plants throughout the Gardens, across Singapore, and internationally.

What you will be working on

The Manager of the Plant Resource Centre (PRC) will support a Senior Manager in managing the PRC within SBG. The PRC is a specialised plant nursery in SBG with the primary functions of collecting and propagating rare and endangered plants, and providing plants to support the Gardens' operations. The manager will be responsible for achieving the functions of the PRC through the following activities:

  • Monitoring, collecting, and propagating rare and endangered plants from the Gardens and around Singapore

  • Facilitating plant exchanges with reputable botanical institutes

  • Coordinating and propagating plants required by the Living Collections team in the Gardens, including conservation and display plants

  • Maintaining comprehensive record-keeping and reporting, including documenting incoming and outgoing plants, labelling, and photography for the plant database

  • Overseeing nursery management, which includes the comprehensive oversight of operations, contractors, and facilities involved in the propagation, cultivation, and care of plants within a controlled environment to ensure optimal growth and production outcomes

In addition, the PRC Manager will be required to carry out the following ancillary activities:

  • Assisting in conservation outreach and training programmes, including hands-on training for industry attachments (local and overseas), interns, students, and volunteers

  • Supporting projects within NParks and the Singapore Botanic Gardens

What we are looking for

  • Area of study in Horticulture, Botany, Taxonomy, or a related field

  • Experience in plant propagation and the maintenance of plant collections, preferably in a nursery setting

  • A passion for growing and caring for a wide range of plants, with the ability to carry out hands-on work in outdoor and nursery environment

  • Proactive and self-motivated, with initiative in following up on site management and assigned tasks

  • Willingness to work occasional weekends to facilitate volunteer programmes, training activities, and other operational tasks

  • A team player who can communicate effectively with contractors, volunteers and stakeholders
