What the role is

We are seeking an experienced and driven scientist to lead a multidisciplinary research and capacity-building programme for preparedness against dangerous pathogens in the environment.

What you will be working on

You will work at the Environmental Health Institute, a public health laboratory under the National Environment Agency. In this role, you will lead multidisciplinary research projects to understand environmental transmission of infectious diseases, assess risks, and recommend mitigation measures. You will develop process improvements to enhance operational efficiency and oversee training and capacity-building efforts to strengthen preparedness. You are expected to shape both field and laboratory capabilities whilst translating research insights into evidence-based operations and policies. This role offers significant opportunities to demonstrate your leadership and interpersonal skills in advancing public health outcomes.

What we are looking for

  • Degree in microbiology or related discipline
  • At least 3 years of working experience, including leading/managing research or capacity-building projects in public health preparedness. The level of offer will be commensurate with applicants’ experience and track records.
  • At least 3 years of experience in Biosafety Level (BSL)2/2+ laboratory settings. Experience in BSL3 laboratory settings is preferred.
  • Excellent domain knowledge and experience in core areas required for a programme in preparedness against dangerous pathogens, including: biosafety practices, experimental design, environmental field sampling principles and techniques, laboratory molecular and culture techniques, public health surveillance and response principles, statistics and data analytics
  • Capacity for systems thinking and inclination for trans-disciplinary science
  • Strong interest in operational research and building capacity for public health preparedness
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and an aptitude for coordination among multiple stakeholders
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment
