Scientist / Senior Scientist - Veterinary Bacteriology (Contract)
What the role is
What you will be working on
Join our trans-disciplinary team at the Centre for Animal and Veterinary Sciences (CAVS) within the AVS cluster. You will provide professional laboratory diagnostic and research support for animal and zoonotic disease biosurveillance programmes, collaborate on research projects with national and international partners, and deliver laboratory services to external customers. Your work will directly contribute to NParks' mission of creating the best living environment through excellence in nature conservation, greenery, recreation, and veterinary care.
Key Responsibilities
Lead projects involving advanced molecular pathogen characterisation, antimicrobial resistance detection, monitoring, and data analysis, as well as method establishment and validation
Develop, establish, and validate test protocols and pipelines for Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) and other sequencing platforms for genomic analysis of veterinary and zoonotic bacterial pathogens, and Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) across various sample types, including environmental samples
Support laboratory diagnostics for disease outbreak investigations and biosurveillance programmes
Contribute to the maintenance and continuous improvement of our quality assurance system in compliance with ISO/IEC 17025:2017 standards
What we are looking for
Areas of study in Biology, Biotechnology, Biomedical Science, Life Science, or related fields.
At least two years of hands-on experience in a relevant veterinary, medical or research laboratory preferred.
Postgraduate qualifications in Microbiology, Life Sciences, or related science discipline is advantageous.
Knowledge of workplace safety and quality assurance systems, preferably ISO/IEC 17025:2017, will be advantageous.
Highly motivated individual with passion for laboratory sciences and its application to support and protect animal health and welfare and biodiversity and conservation.
Proficient in IT skills e.g. Microsoft Office.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team
Possess initiative, leadership, analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
