MDDI conducts Sentiments Research to support data-driven communications, policy thinking and implementation of key issues across Whole of Government. We use quantitative and qualitative research methods to understand how people feel about issues, current affairs and policies. Our research is structured around key focal areas ranging from social, economic, security, infrastructure, to communications- and media-related issues.
Your role is in the Research Capability Development Department (RCDD) in MDDI’s Research and Data Division (RDD). As part of RDD, you will play a hands-on role in shaping how AI and technology are integrated into the government's sentiments research capabilities. Working at the intersection of research, technology, and capability development, you will help build an AI- and technology-enabled research community across government.

What you will be working on
You will work with researchers and technology providers to understand sentiments research requirements, pilot tools and systems, partner stakeholders to experiment with and deploy tools, and drive capability development in AI and technology for sentiments research. This requires both technical curiosity and the ability to work with a broad range of stakeholders to translate new tools and approaches into practical, lasting change.
Your job scope may include:
• Working with researchers and technology providers to trial and implement AI and technology tools that address pain points in the sentiments research process, from data collection through to analysis and reporting
• Coordinating with stakeholders to understand the opportunities and barriers to adopting new tools and processes, and developing strategies to address them
• Working across government to improving the governance and discoverability of sentiments research data through government technology platforms
• Improving researchers' competencies in AI and technology by developing and contributing to capability development programmes that equip researchers across WOG agencies with up-to-date AI and technology skills
• Managing vendors developing AI systems for sentiments research, including scoping requirements, overseeing deliverables, and ensuring that systems developed meet the research and operational needs of government agencies
What we are looking for
• At least 6-8 years of relevant public sector experience, preferably in a sentiments research, technology, or capability development role
• Experience in vendor management, including the ability to scope requirements, manage deliverables, and hold vendors accountable to quality and timeline expectations
• Strong ability to bridge strategy and operations - comfortable thinking about the big picture while also rolling up your sleeves to pilot and test new approaches
• Strong strategic and analytical thinking, with the ability to translate how tools can be applied to complex research needs
• Familiar with AI and technology tools
• Strong command of English for complex submissions and presentations,
• Strong collaboration and stakeholder management skills, with experience working across agencies or with external technology providers
• Meticulous and organised, with the ability to manage multiple workstreams concurrently
• Initiative and sound judgement in handling ambiguous or novel governance challenges
• Experience with or exposure to sentiments research or social science research methods is preferred, as we are seeking officers who can move fluidly between AI and technology work and research work
